FAQs

  • The clarinet studio is comprised of students from around the world who come together as encouraging and supporting peers. These amazing people foster a challenging, yet uplifting and caring studio environment.

Each semester brings new and exciting experiences designed to develop each clarinet student into well-rounded musicians. Guest artists of national and international reputation come throughout each year to provide master classes, clinics, and recitals. Additionally, our annual USM Clarinet Day features world-renowned guest artists, performance experiences, and exposure to quality clarinet equipment.

  • Being a member of the USM clarinet studio involves weekly one-on-one private instruction and group lessons for music majors, music minors, and folks of any major who simply want to improve their clarinet playing. We also have weekly recital class and studio class. Recital class is a safe performing space where music majors (and anyone else who wants to join us) perform on a weekly basis for the other members of the clarinet studio. Studio class is a weekly meeting for music majors and minors in which we listen to clarinet music and explore clarinet-related topics. Previous studio class topics include clarinet cleaning day, duet performances, around-the-room concerto, orchestral excerpts, and life survival skills.

Choose pieces that showcase your musical and technical abilities. Each piece, movement, or etude should be played in its entirety. If a piece is longer than four minutes and there are large, substantial sections, you may play only one large section as long as it is over one minute in length.

    Graduate Music Major:

Prepare 20-30 minutes of clarinet repertoire that includes contrasting styles and tempos. Single movements taken from larger works are acceptable. Orchestral excerpts of your choice are encouraged to be included in this timeframe.
